CHENEY studied under International Who’s Who: Tatiana McKinney; She received a personal Grant from the National Endowment on the Arts through the Connecticut Art Commission; She was accepted in the most prestigious BUYWAYS GALLERY, SIESTA KEY and she’s the author of newspaper column “One Painter’s Opinion” where she blasts ‘effete art snobs’ saying: "If you have the ability to paint or deal in art, you are blessed and need to share the gift - not wear it like a badge!"
Dynamic; immensely talented; prolific and immersed in painting, a luxury enabled by her own company in the film business where her company represented the top locations seen in major movies, TV and commercials for 20 years, CHENEY has spent the last 30 years painting between portraits and what she calls "commentary abstractions".
Fiercely independent even as a portrait painter, CHENEY paints only people she can relate to. Her people are alive as you will see. One commissioned portrait was so emotionally real that the buyer felt forced to phone her parents to make sure they (the subjects) had not been bewitched somehow onto the canvas! Being able to infuse life into an otherwise flat canvas is a measure of the CHENEY Mystique.
Often asked about her inspirations, CHENEY prefers not to discuss the meaning of her art. “I won’t explain them - they must speak for themselves”. And they keep speaking. The spirited liveliness found in every painting created of floating shapes and open form/open color technique continues to fascinate even years after their purchase. Her work is found in over 100 collections across the United States. Over the years, she has heard from owners who tell her about discoveries they 'just found' in a painting - years after they purchased it.
